About TEIS

The Telemedicine and E-health Information Service is run by the University of Portsmouth. It gives access to information about all aspects of telemedicine including:

  • telemedicine activities, both pilot/developmental projects and permanent delivery of healthcare services
  • organisations involved in telemedicine whether as hosts for projects, information facilities, publishers or suppliers of equipment
  • people involved in telemedicine as contacts for organisations and projects
  • publications about telemedicine including articles, chapters, books, reports, surveys, theses and videos
  • equipment currently available for telemedicine

The purpose of TEIS is to provide a background source of information to anyone researching the field or proposing a trial or a larger scale implementation of telemedicine.

History of TEIS

The University of Portsmouth has been maintaining records of UK telemedicine activities since 1998. Originally we were known as the UK National Database of Telemedicine (NDTM). On 15th January 2001, we were relaunched as the UK Telemedicine Information Service (TIS). The term "e-health" was added to our title in October 2003. The new TEIS website was formally launched in January 2004.

In the early days, we were funded by the Research & Development Division of the Department of Health. From May 1999 to April 2002, we were funded by the Information Policy Unit of the Department of Health. During that time, TIS was a joint effort between the University and The British Library. From April 2003 to March 2004, our work was supported by the NHS Information Authority. Currently we maintain the database on a "best efforts" basis using our own resources.

Our database was originally compiled from information collected during separate surveys of Telemedicine and Telecare activity in the United Kingdom, commissioned by the Research and Development Division of the Department of Health. It has since been considerably supplemented by information provided to us by telemedicine practitioners and others.
